Making Connexions for Young Parents in Bath

Making Connexions for Young Parents in Bath

A free course for young parents starts in Bath next Tuesday 25th November, at the Percy Community Centre in New King Street. Called "Valuing Young Parents", the course is open to parents-to-be and mums and dads under 20 years of age, with free registered childcare provided on site.

Designed to enable and encourage their progress back into education, employment or training, the course helps young parents to build confidence in themselves, providing an opportunity to discuss childcare issues, to learn new life skills and polish up old ones, and meet other young parents.

Valuing Young Parents runs for 10 weeks and covers a range of subjects from practical parenting skills to ICT, communication skills and money management.  The course is co-ordinated by Connexions Personal Adviser Chaya Bamber, based at the Connexions West of England office in The Square, Lower Bristol Road.

Speaking about the course, Chaya said: "Being a young parent can be lonely and difficult at times.   This course aims to increase understanding and comprehension of parenting issues and to help those young parents wishing to progress in education, employment or training. It's only a couple of hours a week, but it can make a big difference.  "And, of course, it's an ideal opportunity to meet other young parents."

The course enables learners to achieve or work towards an OCN (Open College Network) accredited Level 2 qualification, which is equivalent to one GCSE at grades A - C.   Flexible in its structure, if a learner is unable to complete the course - perhaps due to a house move or some other life event - they will receive credit (points) for those parts of the course they have completed. Consisting of 10 units in total, the course covers the following areas: child safety; practical parenting; bonding and play; food and health; weaning, feeding and teething; rights, responsibilities and child protection; healthy lifestyles; communication skills; ICT skills and money management. Valuing Young Parents will be held on Tuesdays, 1pm - 3pm, at the Percy Community Centre, New King Street, Bath, BA1 2BN.
