Education at 16+

Photo of woman playing flute Further education happens after you have reached at least 16. It takes place in school sixth forms, colleges of further education and sixth form colleges.

There is a big range of courses you can choose from. Academic courses like A Levels, job-related ones like BTECs and a mix of the two, Diplomas, are some examples.

Going to a college of further education or sixth form college offers a fresh start, a new environment, new people, people of different ages and new tutors.

To help you decide what to do think about:

  • your long-term goals and career plans.
  • your strengths and weaknesses.
  • your likes and dislikes.
  • how you like to learn.
  • where you’d like to study.

There is help towards your living and learning costs if you are between 16 and 19.

Your Connexions personal adviser can help you explore all the courses available and help you decide the best place to study. Going to open days will help you make up your mind.
