Taking a gap year

Many people choose to take a gap year before starting work or a course of higher education. It’s a chance to do something different before the next stage of your life.

Don’t lose sight of what you are planning for the future if you decide to take a gap year. The experiences and skills you gain could give you the edge over other applicants for a university place or job. Build what you learn into your CVs, application forms and interviews.

One in seven A Level students take time out after their studies, before going into higher education. The figure for BTEC National students is much lower. This is probably because the students taking this qualification are more likely to have reached a firm career decision.

The most popular time out choices for students in the South West are:

  • Paid work
  • Study courses
  • Travel
  • Voluntary service
  • Work camps at home and abroad.
