Studying abroad

Studying abroad can add a whole new dimension to your higher education experience.

There are two main ways of studying abroad:

  • Exchange programmes.
The most common way of studying abroad is through the ERASMUS programme. On this programme you can study for between 3 and 12 months of your UK course in a European university. Credits gained count towards your UK qualification. Other exchange programmes are available from UK universities to universities worldwide.

  • Full-time study
UK citizens are entitled to study in any of the European Union member states. In most cases the qualifications used to gain entry to a course of higher education in the UK can be used in the EU.
There are two main things you will need to take into account with this option. First, courses will be taught in the language of the host country. Second, you are unlikely to get a grant or loan from your local authority.
An increasing number of students are also choosing to study in the United States and Australia.

Start your research early if you are interested in spending part, or all, of your time studying abroad.
