Driving

Getting your first motorbike or car is really exciting – freedom and independence! You can drive a moped when you are 16 and learn to drive a car at 17. But don’t ruin the experience by not being aware of the law. Stay legal and you’ll stay driving safely and responsibly.

Travelling and timetables

As you get older and more independent you’ll gain more control over where you decide to go and how to get there.

A successful journey is usually a well planned one so make sure you have:

  • told somebody where you are going and what time you expect to be back
  • a charged mobile phone or coins for a public phone
  • medical supplies, for example, an inhaler
  • checked the times of buses/trains for both your outward and return journey
  • enough money for fares, accommodation, entrance tickets, food and drink
  • enough water if you are going to be away from shops/cafes
  • checked the weather forecast and have taken suitable clothing/shoes/hat/sunscreen
  • a bicycle repair kit and a good bicycle lock (only if you are taking your bike!)

Travel discounts

Young people can travel cheaply with travel cards and special passes.
