Returning to work

Whatever your reasons for being ‘out of work' in the first place, be prepared on CVs, application forms and during interviews to show the positive side.  All life experiences can be a source of learning and self-development.  A ‘challenge' in life can make you a stronger and more determined individual.  Here are some examples:

Situation

Positive experience

Time spent in a young offenders institution

New skills gained; better attitude towards others; better appreciation of what life can offer; determination to do better.

Having a child

Ability to work hard; deciding what's best to do first; putting others first; money management; planning; communicating.

Caring for a relative

Deciding what's best to do first, communicating, negotiating, money management; ability to work hard and put others first.

Speak to your Connexions personal adviser if you are concerned about returning to work.  They will talk through your situation and help you make the most of the skills and attitudes you will have to offer a new employer.  They will also be able to discuss part-time work opportunities, training opportunities and sources of funding.
